The development of the West may be directly correlated to the expansion of small local and regional Express Companies and the westward progress of the Eastern Railroads. In the early years of California, these sometimes one- and two-man Express Companies were the only link for the miners with the outside (Eastern) world since the U.S. Post Office had not yet developed the system to service them.
